Bike Maintenance

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 12:31 AM

Fun times, reading this book, thanks to my housemate for the gift. It's an essential for anyone that owns a non-huffy branded bike. It's rather entertaining. I'm worried about doing repairs when in a jam so I started reading the appropriate section of this book, "Emergency Repairs." So I know mountain biking is crazy, and that the technology that is involved in the ever evolving market is getting better and better. But like any sport/hobby that exists one needs common sense. I'm suddenly remembering Honda Civics with "butterflyed" wheels from their owners cutting their suspention springs, thinking that it's the same as getting properly tuned springs for their car. Or my personal favorite, this huge spolier, that serves no functional purpose, but to make the car look fast. There are some serious things to ponder when selecting equipment, upgrades, or even maintenance. For example, carbon fiber handlebars. Now all of you Civic owning "ricers" out there better understand that this is not your car's hood replacement. Much like an automobile, every component on the bike serves a functional purpose. With your standard metal handle bar after some period of usage you will notice some bending, or in some cases when out in the field a-lot of bending. With a carbon fiber handlebar you don't experience this kind of "bending", because the properties of the material. One day when the epoxy that is holding together the carbon fiber layers that have been molded and built up into a handlebar shape fails and looses it's structural integrity, the rider will probably experience a really easy warning sign. It will most likely fracture, and/or crack. But to a newbie, it's like oh cool carbonfiber, ooh ultra light!! Anyways there's a ton of great info. What is really cool is that this book reminds me of those haynes books that one buys at Pep Boys, or any auto parts store. But with a decent amount of humor that keeps your attention span. Check out the excerpt below.

iii-21 Broken HandlebarIt's probably best to walk home. You could splint it by jamming a stick inside and wrapping it with duct tape. If the break is right next to the stem clamp, you could also loosen the clamp, move the handlebar over so the break is insides the clamp, and retighten it. In either case, you must ride very carefully. The stick could easily break or the clamp could let go of the broken handlebar, leaving you with no way to control the bike. A sudden collision of your face with the ground would follow. From what I've heard, that can be a painful experience. In fact, now that I think of it, you might want to consider just walking your bike home.

Horrid

I love how other people can modify code whenever they want, but not have to maintain it. To all of you "rat head" bastards out there, die!superman.jpgI feel like this.

Monday, August 22, 2005 01:46 AM

I just put the movie Fight Club on.

This is Bob, Bob had bitch tits.
Finally after an entire weekend of off and on fiddling, or as some would refer to as "tinkering" I got this awesome RF remote working with my desktop box. It's by SnapStream, and the model is the Firefly. This is great, now all I have to do is get up and put a new DVD in!! I even got LIRC configured to eject to the DVD!The SnapStream Firefly Remote.I have already successfully gotten a good IR remote called StreamZap working with LIRC.The StreamZap Remote.I have to admit the cool factor on this stuff is up there. Now if I can get myth tv running, so I can stream tv to my laptop!!

Freedom?

This article written by CNN seems to depict George W. Bush's neighbor as this rual person. I think that's pretty sad. Imagine having a group of protesters block the only road to get to your home. And on top of that he realizes that they are using their rights as U.S. citizens to use their free speech, and protest. But like much of the protesting people out there they feel free speech can expand into much much more. So this Texan, decides to start practicing for Dove hunting season by firing his shotgun, on his property!!! I love it! Welcome to Texas, the last real frontier! They got all scared, and thus CNN decided it was news worthy. What a bunch of crap. Thank You CNN, for more crap we americans really don't give a shit about. Oh they sneak in there that there has been group of people (no size mentioned) that is protesting outside of the presidents ranch, and the numbers have increased. I bet the numbers have only increased because there's more media, and their equipment there than people. We really need to realize how the media paints the picture, or at least question it. Notice the Keystone Light box of beer on top of his cooler, when they shot footage of his pump action hunting rifle! I love it. Check this out, so if you goto the CNN website, and look for this...Look at this!!!! If you mouse over on the link to watch the video then look in your status bar at the bottom of the window, you'll see some javascript code to make a popup window appear with the video. Pay special attention to what CNN named the video. You probably want to click on this...You'll see that CNN has decided to call the video bash.crawford.neighbor.cnn. Isn't the press suppose to be impartial?Check out these other media outlets about this story:Associated PressMSNBC News

Happy Birthday

Monday, August 15, 2005 01:58 AM

Christian seems to be turning a year older. Happy Birthday Buddy! May the ultra pretentious women be good to ya down there. I'm really debating on catching a plane tomorrow and buying you a drink. This just means we really need to have a vegas hotel party. Maybe all of us should rent the Real World suite at the Rio in Vegas and throw one HUGE "End of Summer" party. I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I think this is a great excuse.

Awesome, most of us knew it was just a matter of time before someone hacked something together for the rest of us to horde. Well it's here, if you can download that torrent (that's probably going to be really hard to get a hold of). Check out this howto. Some cool videos of a guy that ran OSX on a Sony Vaio Laptop.

Sighting

Thursday, August 11, 2005 11:55 PM

Last week when I flew back from my medsphere interview. I saw an ad for The Foundation for a Better Life on the wall in the baggage claim area. I completely forgot that I took a picture of it. There are many things in life that aren't so coincidental. One of them is when for some reason life isn't going well for me, to notice and see things like this in plain sight. Maybe it's in my head to actually notice these kinds of "signs" when I'm in this mode. Call it what you want. It does give me that weird "hair standing on the back of my neck feeling."Some of my favorites...

Large Amounts

Sunday, August 07, 2005 10:27 PM

For some weird reason I actually started listening to music in the genre of "Hip Hop". So I had put some music on my Shuffle and put it on random and this particular song started to play. I liked the chorus because I think a lot of people think just like this. The song has a sound message, but unfortunately the implementation is very rough.

Gone

Thursday, August 04, 2005 02:56 AM

I wonder what death will be like. I also wonder who will be at my funeral when I die. Will my parents still be alive? Will I have a family or even kids? Will I have turned into a splitting image of my father in my years on this planet? Making everyone around me miserable? If God exists, God would know.
