Curious George

Tuesday, February 28, 2006 05:12 PM

The soundtrack for the film Curious George, is awesome. I have got to hand it to Universal for allowing Jack Johnson to do this album. It's spectacular! There's even a kick ass cover of White Stripes' "We're Going to be Friends." You should definitely try to not pirate this particular CD. I only mention this because on the back of the CD case, there's this message...."Brushfire Records will donate a portion of the proceeds from this album to support environmental education in schools. Printed on recycled paper."The "Printed on recycled paper" part goes for all of Jack's previous records, not a single standard plastic CD jewel case, nor shiny non-recyclable insert.

It seems Jack Johnson's record label Brushfire Records is part of "1% For the Planet" alliance. Here's the mission statement for "1% For the Planet."

1% For The Planet is an alliance of businesses committed to leveraging their resources to create a healthier planet. Members recognize their responsibility to and dependence on a healthy environment and donate at least 1% of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations worldwide. The alliance aims to prove that taking environmental responsibility is good for business.

I think this is a great idea! This makes me think of how Clark Foam the primary provider (about 90%) of surf board blanks went out of business, due to the mis-handling of hazardous materials. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an environmental idealist. This is postive reinforcement for companies to start thinking ethically, environmentally, and get a decent tax write off at the same time.Check out this article at Transworld Business, for the entire story on Clark Foam. Here's an excerpt from the article below.

According to Clark, the main concern of the state and county government is a toxic chemical Clark Foam uses called Toluene Di Isocynate (TDI). He goes on to say that other concerns included the use of polyester resin, dust, trash, some of the equipment he built or was built using Clark's specifications, and numerous safety concerns both for employees and the local community.

9/11/01 a Hoax?

Friday, February 24, 2006 03:02 AM

This is a very compelling documentary on the events, witnesses, and science surrounding 9/11.

I found it on st911.org, it seems a group of scientists have come together to disprove some pseudo facts that have been allegedly force fed to all of us Americans. Surprise...surprise? If/when you're viewing this documentary, try and contrast these pseudo facts with some current events involving Dick Cheney. I mean who shoot's a guy's face off, and then the guy who got shot makes a public statement...."My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice-President Cheney and his family have had to go through this past week." Check out the article here. Honestly THE most powerful vice president EVER.

Ajax and DOM Scripting

Thursday, February 23, 2006 10:33 AM

If anyone out there is interested in an excellent book on Ajax. It's entitled "Ajax in Action", I'm a little over half way through the book, and so far it's great. That being said, I looked through the Apress book, "Foundations of Ajax." All I'm going to say is I was NOT impressed. I'd hate to generalize, but I don't think I've ever liked an Apress book, they are almost as bad as those Wrox books. Wrox books are most easily identified by the awful red cover with yellow lettering and has a picture of the author(s) on the cover. Wrox books are horrible and the code examples in their books are almost always bug ridden. You'd think that with a picture of yourself/themselves on the cover that the author(s) would be far more anal retentive about actual working examples/code snippets.

I also picked up a book on Document Object Model scripting entitled "DOM Scripting" by Jeremy Keith. It came highly recommended by Merc. I've yet to really go through the book yet, you can tell this book is geared for designers. It's all pretty with nice all black pages separating each chapter.

XOSD Plugin Part II

Tuesday, February 21, 2006 02:10 AM

Okay I finally got the Volume slider, and Play/Pause working in this plugin, there's a few more things that need to be done before a release but here is a preview tarball.I hope to have the xosd-sharp, and xosd-banshee-plugin svn repo's up sometime before Friday, February, 24 2006.

XOSD Plugin

Monday, February 20, 2006 05:16 AM

I'm really surprised no one has done this yet. I have done platform invoking (most commonly known as p/invoking) with win32 api's in C# using Visual Studio on Windows XP. I have not done p/invoking in Linux. With the help of FireRabbit and his Linux p/invoking foo, I hacked up a simple X On Screen Display class. I'm in the process of developing an XOSD Plugin for Banshee, here's some preliminary screenshot hottness (below).

If you are going to fail, you might as well fail at a difficult task. Failure causes others to downgrade their expectations of you in the future. The seriousness of this problem depends on what you attempt.

Speaking of which, if you haven't seen or heard about the cartoons recently published in Denmark, you probably should give them a gander.

facesgallery.jpg

This cartoon was not one of the one's published, but it gives you an idea as to the backlashing of Muslims in Denmark.

I'm calling CONSPIRACY! Imagine, just imagine, current events what they are with the middle east, and IRAN producing uranium. Now think about how easy it would be for say the CIA, to approach a Denmark newspaper's editor and say hey, we'll give you <some insane amount of money here> to publish these cartoons! Now this gets all of the muslims rialed up and we know how they get...They'll start burning everything down in protest! Now Condi, "W", and friends sit back and wait for the U.N. to say they can produce uranium, then we counter with, "Look at them they overreacted over cartoons!, and you want them to have nuclear power!! Imagine the consequences!"JUST IMAGINE THAT!!!Found some interesting Anti-Semitic Cartoons published in Qatar's Al-Watan.

Seriously, how is any of the above cartoons any different than this?

Properties of Flexible Designs

Saturday, February 04, 2006 03:52 PM

If you're not a software person this probably won't apply to you.....A flexible object-oriented design exhibits several properties.

  • High cohesion

The degree to which a class does just one kind of thing. Strive for high cohesion -- small classes that do just one kind of thing.

  • Low coupling

Coupling involves what a class knows about the world beyond it. Strive for low coupling -- classes and objects that know as little as possible about other classes and objects.

  • An even distribution of behavior

This is the degree to which an object "does things for itself." Strive to keep state and behavior together in an object. Strive to avoid "controller objects" that control other objects.

  • Strong modularity

This is the degree to which "like things" are grouped. Strive to group objects into meaningful packages, subsystems, processes, etc.

Where Will We Go?

Friday, February 03, 2006 02:06 PM

Despite their lameness in my book, MxPx still has some decently themed artistic songs. I stumbled across this one at random today. I know the lyrics don't really do the track much justice, the recorded song does though. I think this is a good song that's played during a time that all of us has experienced, you know when one phase in life is ending, and another is beginning. This reminds me a lot of college, times were a lot simpler.
