MySpace tackles storage requirements

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 01:43 PM

Wow, this article reveals WAY too much.

The company uses a homegrown distributed file system that runs across 1,000 Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) servers to store the majority of its small files, including MP3s and video clips -- 3 billion images in total. Eight dedicated senior developers and engineers keep this monster up and running night and day.
Woohoo!

Paradox of Choice

Monday, November 27, 2006 03:09 PM

Alright, I've had it. I've been running Vista for about 2 months solid. I have to say on all fronts (developer, user, poweruser, mom typed user), it just isn't good enough. We all have waited yet another YEAR for what? Really?21vistaOff.PNGRedmond can't even get the FUCKING (that's right I swore...) shutdown menu properly narrowed down. I've read the book "The Paradox of Choice," and if you know me, I've probably brought it up in conversation, and urged you to read it.I highly suggest that ALL people that touch software read this book, especially those that are on teams that deal with any kind of user interface. Joel, has nicely intersected these two aspects of my life perfectly, here. That being put out there, it seems that one of the developers that was working at Redmond on Longhorn/Vista on the "Start Menu Shutdown" feature has surfaced, and responded to Joel via his blog here.My favorite quote from that blog is...

We had a Mac that we looked to as a paragon of clean UI.
Personally Apple's OSX combined with Apple's hardware is the BEST personal computer experience out there, I wouldn't deem it "paragon of a clean user interface."Joel has shot back with, the same conclusion that I instantly envisioned, here. I guess it's a good thing this ex-microserf left Redmond, for Google.

Calling the bluff

I would LOVE to do this to the private school i attended. I think I would take it a step further, and call out the administration on their actions and conduct. Then relate that back to Chrstianity.

Being Indie Corporate

Monday, November 20, 2006 05:35 PM

If you're a big fan of Evan Williams read this. He comments on how people don't refer to the company they REALLY work for but rather the aquired company they work for. I'd have to say that's absolutely the case. I'm in that situation right now, and it's easier to just state that I work for <insert aquired social networking site here>. I think it's just the quickest way of telling someone where you work, and what you work on in the shortest number of request/responses possible. Not the "Where do you work?", then the "What exactly do you work on for <insert large internet company name here>?", traditional two (or more) way request(s)/response(s).
